Web design / Field note 19

What makes a good business website in Rwanda

Good websites are not the ones with the most animation. They are the ones that answer a customer’s questions quickly, on a phone, and make the next step obvious.

The useful part

In the first screen say what you do and where, show proof, and give one clear next step such as WhatsApp. Make it fast on mobile data, and keep the details the same everywhere online.

01

The first screen does most of the work

Most visitors decide within a few seconds whether to stay. On a phone, the first screen should answer three questions without scrolling: what is this business, is it for me, and what do I do next.

  • A plain sentence saying what you do and where. “Fresh cakes and bread, delivered in Kigali” beats “Welcome to our website”.
  • A real photo of your work, your products or your place.
  • One main button. In Rwanda that is often WhatsApp.
02

Built for the phone first

Most of your visitors are on phones, often on mobile data. A good site loads quickly, uses text big enough to read without zooming, and has buttons big enough for a thumb.

You can test any website, yours or one you admire, with the free Triad website check. Our phone test guide lists what to look for.

03

Proof and trust

  • Real photos rather than stock images.
  • Examples of work, client names you have permission to show, or reviews from your Google Business Profile.
  • A physical address and a map, if customers visit you.
  • An email address with your own domain, not a free one.
  • Prices or price ranges where you can share them, or a clear way to ask.
04

Examples from real projects

A few Triad projects, with what each does well:

  • DriveLink: one promise on the first screen, three clear paths under it (find, rent or import a car), and a showroom you can browse by make.
  • Ishyo Foods: a brand story told through real products and the farmers behind them, in more than one language.
  • WeConfirm: one product explained in a few seconds, with the app and the shop plugin side by side.
05

Found where customers look

A good website is only half of being found. The same name, address, phone and hours on your Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram and directories help Google trust you. Read how to show up on Google in Rwanda.
