How to get your business on Google Maps in Rwanda

When someone in Kigali searches for a service, Google often shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those places come from Google Business Profiles. Here is how to set yours up properly.

The useful part

Use your real business name, the most accurate category and a complete profile, then ask every satisfied customer for a review. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.

01

Why the map comes first

Search for a service from a phone in Rwanda, such as a web designer, a pharmacy or a car rental, and Google usually answers with a map and three businesses at the top of the page. For many of these searches the map appears above every website. The businesses in it come from Google Business Profiles, not from their websites.

A Business Profile is free. It puts your business on Google Maps, shows your hours, phone number and reviews, and lets customers call, message or get directions in one tap. When Triad checked Google’s AI Mode in October 2026, its recommendations for local services in Kigali were built largely from Business Profiles and their reviews.

02

Create and verify the profile

  • Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account that belongs to the business. If a designer or agency sets it up, ask them to add you as the owner.
  • Enter your business name exactly as customers know it, on your signboard, receipts and website.
  • Choose the primary category that describes your main service most precisely. You can add a few secondary categories later.
  • Add your address, your service area, or both (see the next section).
  • Add a phone number you answer, ideally the same one you use on WhatsApp, and your website address.
  • Verify. Google chooses the method, which may be a phone call or text, an email, or a short video showing your business. Verification can take several days.

While verification is pending, avoid changing the name, address or category. Edits to key details can send the profile back for review.

03

Addresses and service areas in Kigali

Kigali streets are numbered, such as KN 5 Rd or KG 11 Ave. Use the street address a visitor would actually follow, then check that the pin sits on your building, not on the middle of the road. If your building is hard to describe, a plus code from Google Maps gives customers an exact location.

If you visit customers or work online and do not receive visitors at your address, set a service area instead and hide the address. Google’s guidelines ask businesses that serve customers at their locations to show a service area, with the address kept private.

04

Fill in what customers check

FieldWhat to add
CategoryThe most specific primary category, then only secondary categories that are true.
HoursYour real opening hours, plus special hours for public holidays.
Phone and websiteA number that gets answered, and a link to the page that matches the profile, not only your homepage.
Services or productsEach main service with a plain description, in the words customers use.
PhotosYour entrance and signboard, the inside, your team at work if you have one, and real examples of your work.
DescriptionWhat you do, for whom and where, in plain sentences. No links, prices you cannot honour or lists of keywords.
05

Keep the name honest

It is tempting to call the profile “Best Web Design Kigali” instead of your real name. Google’s guidelines say the name should reflect the real world name used on your storefront, website and stationery, and that keywords and locations must not be added to it. Profiles that break this can be suspended.

Use the same name, phone number and address everywhere: the profile, your website, Instagram, Facebook and any business directory. Consistent details help Google trust that they all describe the same business.

06

Earn reviews the right way

Reviews are the part of prominence you can grow every week. Google allows businesses to ask customers for reviews of genuine experiences. Your profile gives you a short review link to share.

  • Ask when a job is finished and the customer is pleased. Send the link on WhatsApp with one line of thanks.
  • Reply to every review, including critical ones. Stay polite, keep private details private and explain what you will do.
  • Never offer payment, discounts, gifts or free services in exchange for a review, or for changing a negative one. Google’s Maps content policy forbids it and removes such reviews.
  • Do not write reviews for yourself or ask friends to review work they never received.
07

Connect the profile to your website

The profile and your website support each other. The profile links to your site; the site confirms the same name, address, phone number and opening hours. A fast contact page with a map, a WhatsApp button and the same details helps both visitors and Google.
